If you’re a foreigner doing business in the United States, you may need an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) or a Social Security Number (SSN). While obtaining these numbers isn’t a service we provide directly, we’re here to guide you and connect you with resources to make the process easier.
What Are ITIN and SSN?
-
SSN (Social Security Number): Reserved for U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and some non-immigrant workers. If you are a foreigner without U.S. work authorization, you won’t be eligible for an SSN.
-
ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number): Designed for foreign nationals and others who aren’t eligible for an SSN but need a number for tax reporting purposes. For example, if you’re earning U.S.-sourced income or need to comply with IRS requirements, an ITIN is essential.
How to Apply for an ITIN
If you are interested in applying for an ITIN, you can file Form W-7 directly with the IRS. The W-7 is the official application form for an ITIN. You’ll need to provide details about your identity, residency, and why you’re requesting an ITIN. You can find all the information you need on how to apply for an ITIN on the IRS website.
